US Firefighters Die in Sniper Ambush

(MENAFN) Two emergency responders lost their lives in a suspected planned attack while reacting to a blaze in the US state of Idaho on Sunday.

First responders were sent to Canfield Mountain—a well-known site for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling in the city of Coeur d’Alene—at approximately 1:30pm local time.

Around thirty minutes later, accounts of gunshots began to emerge, as reported by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Robert Norris informed members of the press that a SWAT unit had been mobilized and was engaged in an armed confrontation with the alleged shooter. “We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak,” he stated.

Later, the Sheriff’s Office revealed that the deceased body of the possible perpetrator was located on Canfield Mountain, and a weapon was discovered close to the scene.

Lieutenant Jeff Howard shared with a news agency that officials are examining the possibility that the fire had been deliberately set to lure fire personnel into an ambush.

Members of the public, including individuals on foot trails, were observed escaping the region.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino affirmed that federal personnel had been sent to deliver “tactical and operational support.”

A law enforcement helicopter was also deployed to help, but it could not touch down due to ongoing gunfire.
