Kremlin Says No Deadline for Ukraine Peace Memorandum
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has clarified that no specific timeframe has been established for preparing a memorandum with Ukraine that would outline the framework for a peace agreement, according to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned on Monday that he and U.S. Leader Donald Trump had concurred during a recent phone conversation that the next appropriate step in addressing the Ukraine conflict should involve creating a document detailing the principles and schedule for a potential peace resolution.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday morning, Peskov emphasized that “there is and cannot be a deadline” for completing such a document.
He acknowledged that although “everyone understandably wants this to be done as quickly as possible,” the process would be complicated due to the intricacies involved, adding, “the devil is in the details.”
Peskov explained that both Moscow and Kiev are expected to compose their respective drafts of the memorandum.
After this initial stage, the two nations would engage in what he described as “difficult” discussions in order to reach consensus on a unified version of the document.
Responding to Putin’s comments, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that his administration would wait for Moscow’s proposal before preparing its own draft of the memorandum.
Both Putin and Trump described their exchange as constructive and optimistic.
Trump expressed confidence that there would be tangible advancement within a fortnight, stating, “If I thought that President Putin did not want to get this over with, I wouldn’t even be talking about it.”
