Russian Prosecutor General Bans Western NGO

(MENAFN) The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has prohibited Amnesty International, the London-based non-governmental organization (NGO), accusing it of fostering Russophobia and backing the Ukrainian military.

In a statement issued on Monday, the office stated that although the “organization positions itself as an active champion of human rights throughout the world,” its headquarters in London has become a “center for preparing global Russophobic projects, paid for by accomplices of the Kiev regime.”

The Prosecutor General’s Office further asserted that “members of the organization support extremist organizations and finance foreign agents’ activities.”

According to Russian authorities, Amnesty International has been actively promoting “increased military confrontation” since the intensification of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

The organization has also been accused of downplaying Ukrainian war crimes, encouraging additional financial aid to Ukraine, and advocating for the economic isolation of Russia.

This move follows a series of actions by Moscow against foreign organizations.

Last month, Russia banned the US-based NGO Hope Harbor Society for allegedly providing financial aid to the Ukrainian military and organizing anti-Russian protests in the US and other nations.

In early April, the Elton John AIDS Foundation was declared an 'undesirable' entity in Russia, accused of advancing a pro-LGBTQ agenda in the country.
